Beauty & Style

My Facebook feed now is full of pregnancy test photos and ultra sounds of their first child, my age bracket is now on its adulthood stage. Most of my friends already became housewives (and me blogging HA!) and others are asking when will I have mine. My PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) prevents me to have one soon not unless I try to make one everyday, yes everyday! Send a kiss (I will discuss PCOS on a separate post)

Being a beauty enthusiast,  they count on me when it comes to beauty and skin care. We all know that there are restrictions when you have a baby in your womb right? But with the stress of gaining weight and tiger stripes in your belly, soon to be mommies still wants to be gorgeous in her growing baby bump.

Sixty percent (60%) of the products we apply on our skin is being absorbed by the body, they go straight into our blood streams. This is why it is very important to be keen about the things you take and use.

Let me tell you some products you should avoid while you are pregnant.

  1. Anything anti-acne such as Salicylic Acid, Retinoid (Vit A), Tretonoin, Beta Hydroxyl Acid and the like.  You are lucky if the effect of your pregnancy is clear skin, the change of your estrogen levels affects your skin. Some pregnant women will experience breakout some will not.
  2. All types of Parabens, most commonly use as preservatives in all skin care products. Even if you are not pregnant it is not advisable to use any products with parabens.
  3. Phatalates, found in most products with fragrance such as hair sprays, hair remover cream deodorant, nail polish, and perfumes. Shocking isn’t it?
  4. Lead, mostly found in some lipstick. This should be avoided by pregnant women because the ingredient goes directly to the placenta.
  5. Synthetic Petroleum or 1,4 Dioxane, Mostly found in facial cleansers, shampoos, moisturizers and other toiletries.
  6. Soy, if you are experiencing chloasma or dark patches in certain areas better to avoid any product with soy because it will make the situation worse. Use “active soy” instead if you want.
  7. Whitening Products such as over the counter bleach, peels, and the like.
  8. Hair Dye/Straightening products if you used to color your hair or have them treated stay away from it in the next nine months or more when you are breastfeeding. Our scalp have pores (obviously) and it will absorb all the chemical found in them.

For makeup, it is still not advisable but if you cannot resist find makeups that are labeled as “non-comedogenic” or “nonacnegenic” these are oil free and won’t clog your pores so it’s safe to use. You can try using mineral cosmetics too as they are safe to use, though some sites claim it could be not, minimal amount won’t hurt your baby.

Also there are products found in your kitchen to replace some commercialize products. You can use olive oil or Argan oil as your moisturizer; sugar to exfoliate; Cucumber for the eyes; Egg White, honey, or oatmeal for mask; lemon as antiseptic.

Let me know if I should do separate post for the skincare home remedies.

Bottom line in becoming pretty when you are pregnant is to be healthy. Drink lots of water and eat fruits & veggies, it makes a big difference to the skin when you are eating healthy. I will suggest to do regular walks too to sweat, as perspiration eliminates toxins in the body.

For everything else, it pays to read the label of the product before purchasing or better yet ask your OB-Gyne about the products you can use. If you think you are not using safe products simply discontinue it and choose one that is not harmful.

Thus, Just feel good about yourself and you’ll glow. It doesn’t matter whether your belly is full of stretch marks already or your nose is bloated. It doesn’t matter how other people will say it is about how you feel, being pregnant is one of the wonderful thing a woman can experience. You brought a new life in this earth and that is enough to feel beautiful.

Good Luck to your pregnancy and have a safe delivery!

SAMMY xx
