What happened at the Wedding Coordination 101 Workshop?
Last year, I pitched to Manila Workshops to have a Wedding Coordination Workshop. The goal of these workshops is to give basic knowledge to anyone who wishes to venture into event management business. Whether it is for offline marketing, social events, or events for a cause, an overview will help us have an idea to make any event successful.
The first run happened last 7 April 2018 at the 47 East Coworking Space in Katipunan. After 83 sign-ups we scored 47 students in total, that is one jam-packed afternoon. It was actually my first time to teach a group for wedding coördination. I am used to giving a briefing to my team.
Sometimes I need extra staff to fill in some posts or if the guests are more 150. The problem with this is not all extra staff you will get have a general idea of how a wedding works. You will end up calling orders throughout the day.
So why not make a workshop and make your student the extra staff you need. You give them knowledge and at the same time experience to decide whether they will pursue wedding coördination.
Why attend a workshop?
For this wedding coordination workshop, it covered the timeline of the wedding, the roles of each person in a team, and the fundamental items you need to have in your kit. If you are a freelancer, most of the time the role you will get in every team will be different. Unless you are regular, the team leader can assign you where you are the best, or you can choose. If you are a team leader, it is a practice to let the team members experience the different roles and then ask them where are they most comfortable.
By doing so, the team can leverage with each other and become more effective in managing an event. As the event manager, you can let go of the little task and focus on the client.
If you know the basic skills you can make a good impression with the other teams you work with and you can score more projects. You can also pass this to your team members to duplicate and make everything automatic.
The basics will also help you foresee possible problems and think of solutions ahead of time. You may also offer help to other team members if they are having a hard time. The pressure of the day will lessen as well.
Even if an event manager is the most stressful job in the world, I will say that it is also the most rewarding one.
What happens after the workshop?
This wedding coordination workshop will have a level 2 – it will cover the package proposal for your clients as well as pricing. If you want to take it seriously might as well be ready to pitch in your services to a prospective client.
After weddings, we plan to also cover making offline marketing workshop to score the big yes from your boss. It will cover finding the right venue, budgeting, and negotiating with your suppliers. We are so excited to bring event management 101 to more people and teach the art of it.
The wedding industry is small and already crowded, but do not worry because every client has their own taste and eventually you can score a project.
A big thanks to you
To all our attendees, we hope that you have learned a lot and you have applied the learnings from this workshop to your wedding coördination projects. I really had fun teaching all of you.
